District CO - Champs

There was nothing particularly spectacular about the rest of the season. We won the rest of the games that year over teams we should have beaten. The only real fight on our hands came from PN-G, an un-rated team who just wouldn't go away quietly. We won the game 9-6 but some real luck was involved on a touchdown called back for a penalty. A couple of weeks later the same PN-G beat Nederland, causing them to be tied with us for the district championship, since out district records were identical. The Bulldogs went on to represent the district in the playoffs since they had beaten us earlier in the year. So our season ended with a 7-3 record and district co-champs. Not much of a thrill for us, sort of like kissing ones own sister.

A couple of players from our class managed to distinguish themselves for the season Larry Pace and Bobby Kirchmer were named all district at their positions. We also had a rather rare occasion where a sophomore played enough on the varsity to earn a letter. He was Raymond Fontenot, and that gave him the chance to become a three year letterman. So another season came and left and we still believed we had something to prove. The team coming up next year was the undefeated bunch who had combined with a team with only 1 loss, during Junior High. We believed we had it in us, and hoped to dazzle the entire state.
